New strategies in changing the coke market environment
19-21 îêòÿáðÿ â ã. The Annual World Conference on the Development of Coke Market was held on October 19-21 in Vancouver (Canada). Representatives of more than 300 manufacturers from different countries, involved in the coal and coke market met to discuss current coke problems and prospects.
Conference workshops were focused on consolidating the metallurgical industry, the cost of raw materials, environmental issues, and also on China's influence on the steelmaking industry worldwide.
Among speakers and members of the summit round table were highly qualified analysts and top managers such as Jim McConnell (CEO, United States Steel Corporation), Tom Citler (chief analyst, Swissmarine Services SA), Gerard McCloskey (Managing Director, McCloskey Group), Michael Barron (President, Claudius Peters (Americas) Inc.), Friedrich Huhn (CEO, Deutsche Montan Technologie Gmbh), Daniel H. Rosen (Principal of China Strategic Advisory).
Members of the Russian delegation (Maxim Dovolnov, Altai-koks, and Evgeny Kozhevnikov, KRU-Trade), who represented the Russian coal and coke industry at the conference, gave a presentation on Russia's position in the world-wide coke market. The presentation, together with a description of the companies' capacities, products and raw material resources, clearly reflected the trends of entire coke-chemical production development in Russia during 2004 and the first half of 2005, including all Russian enterprises of the industry.
An essential part of the presentation described rich material capacities and high engineering and technological level of coke-chemical enterprises in Russia. All these speak for sufficient coke supply capabilities for Russian metallurgy. Currently the main problem of the majority of Russian coal suppliers is the quality of coal concentrate, specifications of which (CSR, CRI, M40, M10, etc.) are usually lower than the world standards.
According to Russian analysts and manufacturers, Russian production facilities need fundamental reconstruction within the next 8-10 years in order to maintain state-of-the-art within the coke-chemical industry.
